DESCRIPTION

A unique house for sale in lovely West Cork, Ireland

This traditional Irish croft, dating back to probably the middle of the nineteenth century, has been imaginatively restored and extended by its architect owner to transform it into a thoroughly modern home with very much its own unique character.

The siting of the house, down a peaceful country lane a couple of miles from the main coast road between Bantry and Glengarriff, is perfect. With beautiful views of the Ouvane River valley and its surrounding hills to the south and the end of Bantry Bay to the west, it sits in rather than on the landscape like so many modern Irish country houses, in a small, easily managed natural garden, with lots of mature trees and shrubs and a well-designed area of external decking for outdoor living, with a raised area to give better views of Bantry Bay at the end of the valley. As just one of many examples of thoughtful design throughout the house, the difference in level betwen the two decking areas is just right to allow the edge of the upper deck to form a seat.

Internally, the house is light, warm and welcoming. There is an abundance of natural timber, contrasting with the generally white walls, a large proportion  of the floors are in solid hardwood, and there are generous areas of tasteful ceramic tiling where appropriate. The quality of daylight in the house is particularly noticeable, resulting in large part from the carefully considered use of roof glazing and windows throughout the house.

Location / Driving distances:

Peaceful and rural as the site certainly is, the house is by no means remote from civilisation. There is a large and well-stocked garage supermarket 5 minutes' drive away, Bantry is 10 minutes, Glengarriff 15 minutes and Cork city and airport are both an hour and a quarter's drive. Ringaskiddy, where the Cork-Swansea ferry departs, is an hour and a half. And West Cork is a friendly place where you will feel really at home and safe, with no security worries.
